The Placer County Water Agency Board of Directors just voted to award 2% pay raises to its employees. PCWA employees are hardworking and capable professionals, but this pay raise made me physically ill. Perhaps I’m out of touch with the state of our economy (I doubt it), but this raise strikes me as both callous and cruel. I know of so many people out of work, so many people who have lost or are losing their homes. I know business owners and workers who have taken huge pay cuts, but feel lucky to have a paycheck at all. We all know scores of people working harder for less money, and government is handing out pay raises? These are difficult times for so many of our constituents and ratepayers, how could an elected board be so out of touch? One board member commented that, “We have to take care of our people.” A fine sentiment, but are not our constituents and ratepayers also our people?
